Matrix is located on the 8th floor of Barrows Hall, on the UC Berkeley campus, near Telegraph and Bancroft Avenues, just up the hill from Sather Gate. There are entrances at both ends of the building, but only one of the elevators on the eastern side goes directly to the 8th floor. You can alternatively take the stairs to the 7th floor and walk up the stairs.
Throughout the Fall 2019 semester, the leaders of a Matrix Research Team on the political economy of computer science ("Graduates for Engaged and Extended Scholarship in Computing and Engineering," or GEESE)—will be convening a series of panel events called "Towards a Political Economy of AI," focused on clarifying the impacts of technical decisions on economic management and social well-being. They will be hosting experts in policy, sociology, and technology to construct a multidimensional picture of AI impact and reimagine its possible futures.
In their first panel, "Sociotechnical Vulnerabilities of AI," they will explore the capabilities and limitations of AI technology. The panelists will be: Morgan Ames, Assistant Adjunct Professor in the School of Information and Interim Associate Director of Research for the Center for Science, Technology, Medicine and Society; Jacob Steinhardt, Assistant Professor in Statistics and EECS; Peter Cihon, Research Affiliate, Center for the Governance of AI, Oxford; and Michael Carl Tschantz, Senior Researcher at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI).
Future panels in this series are scheduled to take place on 10/25, 11/22 and 12/13.
